It’s a solid 3 day’s riding, that’s for sure. But it’s do-able by a large cross-section of adventurers and we know that this event has a very high completion rate by those who have previously attempted it. We aren’t talking about seasoned pros either. Chances are, we’re talking about you! Rat Race designs its events to be achievable; not impossible. This one is inside you – you just need to release your inner mountain biker! If in doubt, email us. We are always happy to advise on riding level and whether this is for you.
Maybe. Our events are designed to be attainable; not impossible. This is certainly a massive effort for anyone who has never ridden a mountain bike and you will need to step up with some serious training to get you to the Start line. However, it’s doable with mental preparation and a good physical training regime and if you are an experienced road cyclist already, you will have the legs for this – all you will need to work on is a bit of off-road technique, reliability and some maintenance know-how!

The Crossing is designed to be accessible for a large cross-section of adventurers and will suit those looking to step up from day riding or to try something “similar but different” from Endurance events such as our own Scotland Coast to Coast multi-sport adventure. This challenge is similar is largely off-road, the principle is the same: A great adventure over a long weekend for those who aspire to spend time pursuing challenge goals in the great outdoors.

It varies each year as the route is tweaked as required from our landowner negotiations, you should expect more off-road than on and where we are on roads (or tarmac surfaces), these are predominantly quiet country lanes and cycle-ways which link together superb and varied off-road sections. Feedback from those who complete it say the road sections are a welcome change and allow the body to recover from some of the tougher off road action.
Yes. You can book our Thursday pre-event transfer from Scarborough to Whitehaven. Please note there is no post event transfer option. This service will depart at 14:00. There will be a 30 minute stop during the journey. Subject to traffic the journey is approximately 4 hours. Bike transfer included. Click here to book.

Our logistics team will be able to recover you and your bike from the course and take you onwards (east) to the next overnight location, where you will be re-united with your gear. You may choose to continue the next day to partially complete the whole event, or if you wish to drop out completely at that point, we will help you connect with onward travel to get you back to where you need to go. Please note, in these circumstances, we will attempt to connect you with the nearest town or public transport hub and cannot take participants back to the Start of the event.
Yes absolutely. For the overnight stops they can join you in our event glampsites that are available for those who have booked one of our serviced tent-hire options. These ‘Glamping B&B’ tent packages include 10cm insulated mattress, bedding, in-tent charging points, camping passes and our breakfast buffet. Packages range from solos to parties of 5. See our glamping packages here. Please note we cannot accommodate participant or supporters’ own tents or campervans.
No problem – you won’t be alone! We get many people doing our events on their own and they always meet others on the trail, or over a beer at the overnights! We offer solo entry or pairs entry. If you are worried about getting yourself there and away under your own steam, where you will leave your car etc, don’t worry! We have a pre-event transport option to connect the Finish to the Start so you can drive away once you have finished the event and be back in the office for Monday morning if you need to!
No. We do not offer refunds but we do offer event transfer vouchers, so you can put your credit to another event. We need 10 clear business days’ notice prior to the event to make these changes plus you will need to pay a £15 or 15% (whichever is greater) cancellation fee. Our pricing structure rewards those that commit furthest in advance and we recommend customers hold the appropriate insurance to cover non-attendance for issues such as illness or travel problems. You can view our transfer policy hereTransfer requests can be made here. You can find full Terms and Conditions here.
Solo entries are not transferable – you can’t give or sell your entry to anyone else. If you no longer wish to take part you can obtain an event credit to the value of your entry fee paid (terms and a fee apply) which you or another person can use towards next year’s event (or any other Rat Race event). If you have purchased a pairs entry, you can add or change team members up to 10 days before the event.
Race entry includes a finishers medal and a standard Rat Race tech tee, sizes are available on a first come first served basis at Registration. Specific event tees are available to purchase online and in the Rat Race store at the event while stocks last.
Camping and accommodation are NOT included in the Entry Fee for the overnight locations. We offer serviced camping options that include showers, bedding and breakfast. Our overnight points also include a real ale bar, secure bike storage, bike mechanic services, hot food for sale and medical facilities. Our ‘Glamping B&B’ tent packages include 10cm insulated mattress, bedding, in-tent charging points, camping passes and our breakfast buffet. Packages range from solos to parties of 5. See our camping packages here. Please note we cannot accommodate participant or supporters’ own tents or campervans.
Our overnight stops only offer ‘Glamping B&B’ packages. We cannot accommodate participants or supporters pitching their own tents or bringing a campervan. Our tent hire packages have become the dominant choice at our campsites, so we are now building our systems to exclusively offer this.
We do, but we call them Pit Stops. At the Pit Stops we have some snacks available, water, medical facilities and toilets. See below to check out what you can expect at the Pit Stops in the way of food and drink.
Pit Stops are provided on each stage between the overnight locations. At the Pit Stops you will be able to fill water bottles and hydrations bladders; and we will offer cakes, sweets, fruit and small snacks and some savoury goods. We will not offer sports nutrition as this is down to very personal choice and you should therefore plan to bring your own sports nutrition gels, powders, bars and other supplies with you.

Be prepared for only one point enroute where you will be able to access drinking water. Therefore it is essential you have capacity to carry at least 2L of water with you.

A mountain bike is certainly best. All other bike types will struggle. It does not have to be flash or fancy, but it does need off-road tyres and it must be reliable. The course features on and off road sections but a large proportion of the course is off-road.
Yes. Our partners at British bike hire will be happy to help. Just get in touch direct – email:  info@britishbikehire.co.uk  or phone: 0800 689 3527
Yes. At the overnight locations (and at the Start) we will have a Rat Race Bike Workshop offering light bike maintenance. They will also have bike spares for sale. The labour for this service is free to you but any parts that are required will need to be paid for. To be clear, this is repair support for issues you may be having or have arisen during the day and not a free daily bike service.
England can be wet. Even in summer! You should dress on the ride to be self-sufficient for a day in the saddle and we will issue both mandatory and recommended kit lists. You will have access to dry gear from your bag at the overnight locations.
Not specialist as such, although you will be required to carry some gear at all times that we will insist on. This will fit into a small backpack or hydration bladder bag, a bum bag or a large saddlebag. We will publish a mandatory kit list that must be carried by all participants at all times.
Registration is open the day before the event starts (Thursday) only. Please note that you cannot register on Friday morning before the event. Registration will be open from 3pm until 10pm at Whitehaven. All trackers must be collected from Whitehaven at the registration venue.
The Crossing is not a race. We publish the times captured by our tracking system in alphabetical order for your information and comparison.

Why is it not a race? Rat Race’s ethos has always been about inspiring folk to undertake challenges in awesome outdoor locations. This is not formal race environment and there are no winners and losers and we do not award prizes for the fastest folk. Rat Race totally appreciate the incredible commitment of those taking on the challenges we lay down and each participant is as important as the next regardless of how fast you can bike.

In delivering this challenge we prioritise factors such as safety, camaraderie and environmental concerns. Respecting the wishes of landowners, highway regulations and environmental stakeholders with our route management and litter policies is vital in being able to bring folk together and have this common experience. In terms of safety we are often operating routings in exposed and remote locations, on public bridleways and highways. In order to reasonably balance all of these factors we emphasise that the event is not a formal race environment, rather it a challenge in the great outdoors. Caring for fellow competitors, litter control, closing gates and taking care on road crossings are what the event is about, rather than being the fastest across the course.

Rat Race has invested heavily in adding GPS tracking to this event. This befits challenges of this nature, adding a strand to our safety system so that we can pin point folk that are lost or off-course; and respond with as much accuracy as possible in an emergency. Our tracking platform is therefore primarily for our race and safety management. It is not a race timing system. But it has features we can seek to utilise on top of our safety features, to enhance the supporter experience and to generate finisher times. That is our commitment: An added safety function first, a spectator service second and a finisher time third.
